This little vesta case has real presence in the hand, its surface given over entirely to a dense hand engraved leaf pattern surrounding a blank cartouche left ready for an owner's initials. Made by John Gilbert in Birmingham in 1900, it carries the soft, worn character only a well used pocket piece develops over more than a century.
